Ever since I moved to Jacksonville, Café Frisch has been on my list.

But if you know about this experience… then you probably already know the biggest catch:

You have to plan ahead.

Reservations can fill up fast, and from what I’d heard, you really need to book about a month (sometimes more) in advance. So even though I had wanted to go for a while, I kept putting it off.

Thankfully, my husband reminded me about it, and we finally went ahead and booked it.

And let me just say…

I am SO glad we did.

We ended up waiting about a month and a half for their Caribbean Night at FSCJ’s Café Frisch — and it was absolutely worth it.

So What Is Café Frisch?

Café Frisch is basically a student-led dining lab where culinary and hospitality students serve real guests as part of their training.

In other words:
Students cook, serve, and create a true restaurant-style experience as part of their coursework…

And we get to enjoy a gourmet three-course meal for around $15.

Honestly? Sign me all the way up.

Not only are you getting an incredible meal for an amazing price, but you’re also supporting students as they build real-world experience.

First Impressions: Fine Dining Energy

From the moment we arrived, it already felt special.

We checked in at the front with the host, who was super polite, and then we were escorted to our table.

This is definitely more of a white-tablecloth experience, so my husband and I decided to dress a little nicer for the occasion — not overly fancy, but enough to match the vibe.

Once seated, we were introduced to our student server, who was absolutely wonderful the entire night.

He was attentive, kind, professional, and genuinely made the experience feel elevated.

The Menu (And Oh My Gosh… The Food)

We were offered drinks first — I went with tea and water, while my husband got wine and water (just keep in mind alcohol is an extra charge beyond the $15).

Then came the fun part:
Choosing our appetizer, entrée, and dessert.

And y’all…

Everything was delicious.

My entrée was oxtails with rice and peas, and it was honestly one of my favorite parts of the night.

But if I had to pick the true standout?

The rum cake.

Listen… I had never really had a rum cake that made me stop and think about it like that before.

It was divine.

Like… genuinely one of those desserts you keep thinking about afterward.

They Really Thought of Everything

One thing I really appreciated was how organized they were before the event even started.

When we wanted to reserve our spot, we contacted the school through the email listed on their website.

We basically reached out saying we wanted reservations for Caribbean Night, and after some time, they confirmed everything.

Then, a day or two before our reservation, they actually called to:

• Confirm our reservation
• Ask about allergies
• Check for dietary restrictions

And honestly? That attention to detail made it feel even more like a true fine dining experience.

Why I Love Experiences Like This

What made this even more special is that this isn’t just dinner.

It’s community.

You’re supporting students.
You’re helping future chefs and hospitality professionals practice.
And you’re getting an incredible experience in return.

After I posted this on TikTok, so many people were shocked they had never heard of Café Frisch before — and that’s exactly why I love sharing things like this.

Jacksonville has so many hidden gems that people don’t always know about, and this is definitely one of them.

I love being able to share these experiences not just with coworkers, family, and friends… but with our growing online community too.

Because when we support things like this, everybody wins:

• The students get valuable experience
• The community gets an affordable, unique night out
• And Jacksonville gets to keep growing through programs like this

Final Thoughts:

My husband and I are absolutely planning to book again in the future.

The food was amazing.
The service was amazing.
The experience was amazing.

Café Frisch is 100% worth adding to your list.

My Biggest Tip:

Book early — seriously.

Try to reserve at least a month or two ahead if you really want a specific themed night.
